Battle of Lumphanan (Death of Macbeth)

Macbeth, the once-powerful king, is mortally wounded in battle against Malcolm Canmore's forces. He lies dying on the battlefield at Lumphanan, surrounded by the wreckage of his final stand.

Setting

A rugged, hilly battlefield near Lumphanan, strewn with bodies and discarded weapons. The ground is uneven, with patches of heather and gorse bushes. A small stream trickles nearby, its waters tinged red.

Characters

Macbeth
primary
A middle-aged man of strong but battered build, his face weathered from years of battle and rule. His once-proud stance is now broken, with deep wounds staining his tattered armor. His dark hair is streaked with grey, and his piercing eyes burn with a mix of defiance and despair.
Malcolm Canmore
primary
A tall, broad-shouldered man in his late twenties with a strong, angular jaw and piercing blue eyes. His face is weathered from years of campaigning, with a short, well-groomed beard. His long auburn hair is tied back with a leather cord, revealing a prominent scar above his left brow—a mark from a past battle.
Highland Warrior
secondary
A battle-hardened warrior in his late 30s, with a muscular build honed by years of combat. His face is weathered and scarred, with a thick, matted beard streaked with gray. His deep-set eyes, framed by bushy brows, show both fatigue and steadfast resolve. His dark hair is tied back with a leather thong, revealing a prominent forehead and a nose that has been broken at least once.
Bard
secondary
A middle-aged man with a wiry frame, his face weathered by years of travel and storytelling. His keen eyes miss nothing, and his fingers are ink-stained from chronicling events. A leather satchel hangs at his side, filled with parchment and writing tools.
Wounded Soldier
background
A young to middle-aged man with a gaunt, dirt-streaked face and a beard matted with blood. His chainmail is torn at the abdomen where a spear wound leaks dark blood. His left arm drags uselessly, the shoulder crushed by a mace blow. His right hand claws at the earth as he crawls, fingers blackened with soil and dried blood.

Dialog

Macbeth So it ends thus, Malcolm son of Duncan. The fates weave their threads, but I shall not kneel before thee.
Malcolm Canmore Yield, Macbeth. Thy reign ends here, by steel and by right. The crown returns to its proper line.
Macbeth A king does not yield! The witches spoke true—none of woman born shall defeat me. Yet here we stand.
Malcolm Canmore Aye. And by my hand, Scotland shall be whole again. For my father’s shade and the living both.
Bard The ravens circle above Lumphanan’s field, their black wings catching the dying light. A kingdom’s fate turns with this day’s end.
Macbeth Then strike, Malcolm. Let history name me the last king who stood unbowed.
Malcolm Canmore So be it. For Scotland.
