Submission of the English nobles at Berkhamsted

Submission of the English nobles at Berkhamsted

The Saxon nobles kneel before William the Conqueror in submission, marking the formal acceptance of Norman rule after the Battle of Hastings.

Setting

The great hall of Berkhamsted Castle, a recently constructed Norman motte-and-bailey fortress. The hall is a large, rectangular space with high wooden beams supporting a thatched roof. The walls are lined with tapestries depicting Norman victories, and the floor is covered with fresh rushes mixed with winter herbs. A raised dais at one end holds a simple but imposing wooden throne.

TNGF
SELECTED
William the Conqueror
primary
A powerfully built man in his late 30s with a commanding presence. His face is square-jawed with piercing dark eyes and close-cropped dark hair. A thick beard covers his lower face, neatly trimmed in the Norman fashion. His posture exudes authority, with broad shoulders and a muscular frame from years of military campaigns.
Saxon Thegn
primary
A middle-aged Saxon nobleman with a muscular build, his face weathered by years of battle and outdoor life. His once-proud posture is now bent in reluctant submission, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. His long, unkempt beard is streaked with grey, and his piercing blue eyes burn with suppressed fury.
Norman Knight
secondary
A tall, broad-shouldered warrior in his late 20s, with a weathered face marked by a recent scar across his left cheekbone. His steel-blue eyes remain vigilant beneath the nasal guard of his helmet. The knight's muscular frame is evident even beneath his chainmail, with hands calloused from years of swordplay.
Saxon Priest
secondary
A middle-aged man of slight build, with a gaunt face framed by thinning grey hair. His deep-set eyes are shadowed by fatigue, and his lips move silently in continuous prayer. His hands, clasped tightly before him, bear the calluses of a life spent in both spiritual and physical labor.
