Foundation of Stift Zwettl

Abbot Otto and the Master Builder oversee the laying of the first permanent stone foundations for Stift Zwettl monastery, marking the transition from temporary wooden structures to a lasting spiritual

Setting

A clearing by the Kamp River, surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills. The site is marked by freshly cut timber and cleared earth, with the beginnings of stone foundations visible. Workers and monks move purposefully between temporary wooden shelters and the riverbank.

Characters

Abbot Otto
primary
A tall, lean man in his early fifties with a deeply lined face and piercing blue eyes. His tonsured head shows greying hair, and his hands are calloused from both prayer and labor. He carries an air of quiet authority.
Master Builder
primary
A middle-aged man with a sturdy build, his arms muscular from years of manual labor. His face is weathered, with sharp eyes that miss no detail. Short, practical brown hair and a neatly trimmed beard frame his focused expression.
Novice
secondary
A slender young man in his late teens with close-cropped brown hair and earnest blue eyes. His fair skin is flushed from labor, and his hands show the beginnings of callouses from manual work. He moves with a careful balance between youthful energy and monastic discipline.
Laborer
secondary
A wiry peasant man in his late 30s with sun-browned skin and calloused hands. His shoulders are slightly hunched from years of physical labor, and his dark hair is cropped short with streaks of gray. A fresh scratch runs along his forearm from handling rough stones.
Stonecutter
background
A burly man in his late thirties with sun-weathered skin and muscular arms honed by years of stonework. His calloused hands move with practiced precision, and his dark brown hair is cropped short to keep it out of his eyes while working.

Dialog

Abbot Otto As the Psalmist says, 'Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.' Yet we must honor Him with our hands as well as our hearts.
Master Builder The frost comes early in these valleys, good father. We must set the choir foundations before the ground hardens.
Laborer Master... this river stone splits clean. Good for quoins.
Abbot Otto Like the living stones of Christ's temple, each must bear the weight according to its nature.
Master Builder Aye, but nature cares not for piety when the rains come. The footings must be deeper here where the clay softens.
Laborer The ox teams... they founder in the wet ground by the riverbank.
Abbot Otto Then we shall pray for Saint Bernard's intercession—both for strong foundations and patient beasts.
