Death of Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the High Middle Ages, lies on his deathbed in the infirmary of Clairvaux Abbey. The monks surrounding him maintain a solemn vigil

Setting

The austere infirmary chamber of Clairvaux Abbey, a simple stone room with a single narrow window. The space is dominated by a wooden bed draped with plain linen, surrounded by kneeling monks in white habits. The scent of medicinal herbs mixes with beeswax candles.

Characters

Bernard of Clairvaux
primary
A gaunt, pale man in his early sixties with sunken cheeks and deep-set, piercing blue eyes that still burn with spiritual fervor despite his weakened state. His once-robust frame is now emaciated from prolonged illness, and his hands, clasped together in prayer, are skeletal with prominent veins. A thin white beard frames his jawline, and his tonsured scalp is nearly bald.
Brother Infirmarer
secondary
A middle-aged monk with a gaunt frame and deep-set eyes that speak of countless vigils. His hands are rough from preparing poultices yet move with practiced gentleness. A thin tonsure crowns his head, the remaining hair streaked with grey.
Novice
secondary
A young monk in his late teens, slight of frame with a boyish face that has yet to lose its youthful softness. His fair complexion is flushed with emotion, and his hands are calloused from manual labor but still retain the delicacy of youth. His tonsured head and clean-shaven face mark his status as a novice.
Ailing Monk
background
A gaunt man in his late fifties with sunken cheeks and hollow eyes, his pallid complexion marked by the toll of prolonged illness. His thin frame is barely visible beneath the rough woolen habit, and his hands clutch weakly at the blanket covering him.
