Treaty of Constance

The Holy Roman Emperor's representatives and the Papal Legate are about to sign the Treaty of Constance, a pivotal agreement that seeks to resolve the Investiture Controversy by delineating the powers

Setting

The grand nave of Konstanz Cathedral, a Romanesque basilica with towering stone columns and a high vaulted ceiling. The space is filled with the quiet murmurs of clergy and nobility gathered for this historic moment. The altar area is prepared with a large wooden table where the treaty will be signed, set against the backdrop of the cathedral's intricate apse.

Characters

Imperial Chancellor
primary
A tall, imposing figure in his late 50s with a sharply defined jawline and piercing gray eyes that command attention. His silver-streaked dark brown hair is cropped short in the military style favored by imperial nobility, and his posture carries the unshakable bearing of a man accustomed to wielding power.
Papal Legate
primary
A gaunt man in his late fifties with a sharply defined nose and deep-set eyes that burn with quiet intensity. His thin lips are pressed together in a contemplative frown, and his pale skin suggests years spent in scriptoriums rather than under the sun. His hands, though aged, are meticulously clean, with long fingers accustomed to holding quills and sacred texts.
Bishop of Konstanz
secondary
A middle-aged man of average height with a slightly portly build, clean-shaven with a round face and keen, observant eyes. His thinning gray hair is neatly tonsured in the clerical fashion. His hands are soft and well-kept, with a bishop's ring prominently displayed.
Scribe
secondary
A middle-aged Benedictine monk with a gaunt face, deep-set eyes, and ink-stained fingers from years of meticulous scriptorium work. His tonsure is neatly shaven, and his posture suggests a lifetime bent over manuscripts. His hands are steady but show early signs of arthritis. His build is slight, typical of monastic asceticism, with a scholar's stoop.
Imperial Guard Captain
background
A formidable, broad-shouldered man in his late 30s with a close-cropped beard and a battle-hardened face. His piercing blue eyes scan the room with military precision, and a faint scar runs diagonally across his left cheekbone—a reminder of past service. His posture is rigid with disciplined alertness.

Dialog

Imperial Chancellor As was established in the time of the Emperor Lothair, the investiture of bishops shall remain under imperial prerogative—salvo iure, of course, the spiritual consecration by the Church.
Papal Legate Secundum canones, the investiture must remain under the authority of Rome. The temporal sword may not wield the spiritual—lest we return to the days of simony and lay interference.
Bishop of Konstanz By God's mercy, might we heed the precedent of Worms? The Emperor may grant the regalia, while the Church bestows the spiritual office... for the peace of Christendom.
Imperial Chancellor A compromise... provided Rome acknowledges that the Emperor’s right to withhold regalia, in cases of disloyalty, remains inviolate.
Papal Legate Salvo iure Ecclesiae... Rome shall consent—so long as the Emperor swears, upon his soul’s salvation, never to deny regalia capriciously.
Bishop of Konstanz Then let it be inscribed thus, with the Holy Gospel as witness... and may this accord heal the wounds of our realm.
Imperial Chancellor So agreed. But mark this well, Legate—the Crown does not yield, it grants.
