Battle of Legnano
The Lombard League soldiers make their desperate stand against the imperial forces of Frederick Barbarossa, defending their communal freedoms on the plains of Legnano.
Setting
A wide, open plain near the town of Legnano, scattered with patches of spring wildflowers and trampled grass. The battlefield is bordered by scattered farmsteads and the distant silhouette of Legnano's walls. The dry earth is churned by the movement of thousands of soldiers and horses.
Characters
Lombard Captain
primary
A broad-shouldered man in his late 40s with a weathered face marked by old scars. His thick, graying beard is braided in the Lombard fashion, and his piercing blue eyes scan the battlefield with tactical precision. His muscular frame shows the wear of decades of warfare, yet he moves with the controlled energy of a seasoned commander.
Lombard Soldier
secondary
A young man in his early twenties, wiry and strong from years of labor before joining the militia. His face is smeared with dirt and sweat, his dark hair matted under a simple leather cap. His hazel eyes are wide with a mix of fear and determination.
Imperial Knight
secondary
A towering figure clad in gleaming plate armor, his surcoat emblazoned with the imperial eagle of Frederick Barbarossa. His face is obscured by a great helm, but his broad shoulders and powerful build mark him as a veteran warrior. The knight's gauntlets are spattered with mud and blood, and his sword shows signs of recent use.
Militia Archer
background
A wiry, sun-browned bowman in his late 20s with a sharp nose and deep-set eyes that squint from years of judging distances. His forearms are corded with muscle from decades of drawing a longbow, and a thin scar runs diagonally across his left cheekbone.
Imperial Squire
background
A slender youth of approximately 15 years, with a flushed face streaked with dirt and sweat. His light brown hair is tousled beneath a simple linen coif, and his hazel eyes are wide with exertion. His hands are raw from handling equipment, and his tunic is stained with grass and mud.
