Death of Conrad IV

Conrad IV, the young King of Germany and Sicily, lies feverish and dying in a military tent during his Italian campaign, surrounded by knights and physicians who are powerless to save him. The collaps

Setting

A large military tent in a temporary camp near Lavello, Italy. The tent is made of heavy canvas, reinforced with wooden poles, and adorned with faded Hohenstaufen banners. The ground outside is muddy from spring rains, and the sounds of the camp—horses neighing, men murmuring—filter through the fabric.

Characters

Conrad IV of Germany
primary
A gaunt young man in his mid-twenties, with sunken cheeks and fever-flushed skin. His once-vibrant auburn hair is matted with sweat, clinging to his forehead. His blue eyes, though clouded with pain, retain a piercing quality. His frame, once robust from years of campaigning, now appears fragile beneath the thin linen sheets.
Physician
primary
A middle-aged man of slight build, with a gaunt face framed by a neatly trimmed beard streaked with grey. His deep-set brown eyes are weary but alert, and his hands are stained with herbs and potions. His posture suggests a lifetime of study and stooping over patients.
Knight Commander
secondary
A battle-hardened knight in his late forties, with a broad, muscular frame and a face weathered by years of campaigning. His short-cropped hair is streaked with grey, and a thick, jagged scar runs from his left temple to his jawline, a memento from past battles. His piercing blue eyes are sharp with vigilance.
Squire
secondary
A lean youth of about 16 years, with sun-browned skin and a mop of unruly brown hair kept short in the manner of military attendants. His hands are calloused from handling equipment, and there's a fresh scratch on his cheek from recent camp duties. His build is wiry but strong, accustomed to the physical demands of squire service.
