Battle of Wakefield

Richard, Duke of York, leads his outnumbered forces against Lancastrian troops in a desperate battle near Sandal Castle, moments before his defeat and death.

Setting

Snow-covered battlefield near Sandal Castle, with scattered trees and frozen ground. The castle looms in the distance, its stone walls dusted with snow. The field is uneven, with patches of frozen mud and trampled snow marking the movements of troops.

Characters

Richard, Duke of York
primary
A tall, broad-shouldered man in his late forties with a strong, angular face, piercing blue eyes, and a neatly trimmed beard streaked with grey. His features are weathered from years of campaigning, with deep lines around his eyes and mouth. His posture exudes authority, though there is a weariness in his stance.
Yorkist Knight
secondary
A battle-hardened knight in his late 30s, with a muscular build from years of combat. His face bears the scars of previous battles, including a prominent slash across his left cheek. His dark brown hair is cropped short beneath his sallet helm, and his piercing blue eyes show both weariness and resolve. His hands are calloused from gripping sword and reins.
Yorkist Archer
secondary
A wiry man in his late twenties with a sun-weathered face and calloused hands from years of archery practice. His brown hair is matted under a simple cloth coif, and his sharp eyes constantly scan the approaching Lancastrian forces. He stands with the slightly hunched posture of someone accustomed to carrying heavy equipment.
Lancastrian Scout
background
A wiry man in his late twenties, with a weather-beaten face and sharp, observant eyes. His lean build suggests years of hard riding and scouting. His cheeks are reddened from the cold, and his breath forms visible puffs in the frigid air.

Dialog

Richard, Duke of York By God's grace, we shall make our stand here. Let the Lancastrians come and taste our steel.
Yorkist Knight My lord, their numbers are thrice ours! Should we not withdraw to the castle walls?
Richard, Duke of York Nay. To retreat now would be to admit defeat before the battle is joined. We will meet them on this field, as men of honor.
Yorkist Knight But my lord, the snow hinders our movements, and the ground is treacherous. If we fall back now—
Richard, Duke of York Enough! Would you have me slink away like a whipped cur? We fight here, and God will judge the righteous.
Yorkist Knight As you command, my lord. We will stand with you to the last.
Richard, Duke of York Then let us make our mark upon history this day. For York, and for England!
