Battle of Mount Ortigara

A small Italian assault team attempts to scale the final ridge of Mount Ortigara under heavy Austrian sniper fire, knowing their position is already compromised by earlier failed attacks.

Setting

The rugged slopes of Mount Ortigara, a jagged limestone peak in the Dolomites, scarred by trenches and shell craters. The high-altitude battlefield is littered with barbed wire, abandoned equipment, and the remnants of shattered trees.

Characters

Lieutenant
primary
A young Italian officer in his late 20s, with a lean but wiry build from years of mountain warfare. His dark brown eyes are sharp but shadowed by exhaustion, with deep lines forming around them from constant squinting into the distance. His olive skin is smudged with dirt and gunpowder residue, and a fresh scratch runs down his left cheek from a near-miss shrapnel fragment. His black hair is damp with sweat beneath his officer's cap.
Sergeant
primary
A grizzled man in his late 30s, with a weathered face marked by deep lines and a short, unkempt beard. His build is solid, broad-shouldered from years of carrying heavy gear, with calloused hands that grip his rifle with practiced ease. His eyes are sharp, constantly scanning the terrain for threats.
Rookie Soldier
secondary
A young man in his late teens, barely out of training, with a lean but strong build. His face is smeared with dirt and sweat, his wide eyes betraying his fear despite his attempts to appear brave. His hands tremble slightly as he grips his rifle.
Wounded Soldier
secondary
A young man in his early twenties, lean and wiry from months of hard living in the trenches. His face is streaked with dirt and sweat, his dark hair matted under a bloodied bandage. A ragged wound on his shoulder is hastily bandaged with torn strips of uniform fabric.
Austrian Sniper
background
A shadowy figure, barely visible through the scope of his rifle. His face is obscured by the brim of his field cap and the angle of the sunlight. He has a lean, wiry build, typical of high-altitude soldiers who endure long marches and sparse rations. His hands are steady, fingers wrapped around the rifle with practiced ease.

Dialog

Lieutenant Steady, soldiers. The Austrians are dug in like marmots in those limestone pockets—wait for the artillery pause, then advance by the scree slope.
Sergeant Kid—keep your head down until we move. That sniper's still hunting.
Rookie Soldier Sì, sì, signore—but the shells... the shells keep coming!
Lieutenant The wind shifts in three minutes—their gunners will lose our scent. Sergeant, have the men fix bayonets when the barrage lifts.
Sergeant Bayonets it is. And kid? Breathe through your teeth—it's thinner up here.
Rookie Soldier Signore... my brother fought at Pasubio. Did the mountain... did the mountain ever answer back?
Lieutenant The Dolomites only whisper to the living, soldier. Now—watch for the smoke drift. Advance—advance when it veils the ridge.
