Setting

A devastated battlefield near Passchendaele, Belgium, during the Third Battle of Ypres. The landscape is a sea of mud, dotted with shell craters filled with water, remnants of barbed wire, and the occasional shattered tree stump. The ruins of the village can be seen in the distance, barely recognizable through the haze and smoke.

Characters

Lieutenant Harris
primary
A young British officer in his mid-20s, with a lean but wiry build from months of trench warfare. His face is smeared with mud and sweat, with sharp blue eyes that scan the battlefield constantly. His uniform is soaked through, clinging to his frame, and his hands are rough from gripping his revolver and map case.
Sergeant Dawson
primary
A grizzled British NCO in his late 30s, with a square jaw covered in stubble and deep-set eyes that have seen too much war. His face is weathered, with a prominent scar running from his left temple to his cheekbone. His build is stocky and muscular, built for endurance rather than speed.
Private Wilkins
secondary
A young British soldier, barely out of his teens, with a thin, wiry build and a face that still carries traces of boyishness. His wide, fearful eyes are shadowed by exhaustion, and his cheeks are smeared with mud and grime. His uniform clings to him, soaked through from the relentless rain and mud of the battlefield.
Corpsman Ellis
secondary
A wiry man in his late 20s with a gaunt face streaked with mud and sweat. His eyes are bloodshot from exhaustion, and his hands are raw from constant work. A thin scar runs along his left cheekbone, partially hidden by grime.
German Sniper
background
A shadowy figure concealed within the ruins of a shattered farmhouse, his body wrapped in a mud-caked sniper's cape. His face is obscured by a sniper's veil, revealing only piercing eyes scanning through the scope of his Gewehr 98 rifle. Lean and wiry from months of trench warfare, his hands are steady despite the chaos around him.

Dialog

Lieutenant Harris Sergeant Dawson—confirm our position! This mud... the map coordinates can't be right.
Sergeant Dawson Grid's shot, sir. Follow the wire stumps—they’re our markers now. Keep movin’ or we’re sitting ducks.
Private Wilkins Sarge—I can’t see the rest of the lads! They’re gone, ain’t they? Gone in the mud—
Sergeant Dawson Eyes forward, Wilkins. You look back, you’ll join ’em. Harris—order advance, now.
Lieutenant Harris Right. Platoon—advance by sections, sections! Dawson, take point—
Private Wilkins But the shells—they’re walkin’ right toward us! Sir, please—
Sergeant Dawson Move or die, lad. Only choices left.
