Council of Chalcedon

The Council of Chalcedon convenes to resolve the theological conflict over the nature of Christ, with intense debates between bishops and political maneuvering by Emperor Marcian.

Setting

The Council of Chalcedon is held in the grand basilica of Hagia Euphemia, a spacious and ornate structure with high vaulted ceilings and marble columns. The hall is lined with rows of wooden benches for the bishops and church dignitaries, with a raised dais at the front where the presiding officials sit.

His skin is weathered from years of travel and public speaking in the Mediterranean sun.
Bishop Leo of Rome
primary
A man in his late 50s, with a strong but slightly stooped posture from years of scholarly work. His face is lined with wisdom and authority, with sharp blue eyes that seem to pierce through any pretense. His thinning grey hair is neatly trimmed, and his beard is short and well-groomed.
Emperor Marcian

Archdeacon
secondary
A middle-aged man with a lean, scholarly build, his sharp features and high forehead suggesting years of study. His dark hair is streaked with grey, tied back in a simple knot, and his piercing eyes are framed by faint lines of concentration.
Imperial Guard
background
A tall, muscular soldier in his late 20s, with short-cropped dark hair and a clean-shaven face. His weathered skin and stern expression suggest years of military service. He stands with the disciplined posture of a trained warrior.

Dialog

Bishop Dioscorus of Alexandria Do you not see the peril in dividing our Lord into two natures? As it is written in the Gospel of John, 'The Word was made flesh'—not two, but one incarnate nature!
Bishop Leo of Rome Yet the Apostle Paul himself distinguishes between Christ's divinity and humanity in his Epistle to the Philippians. To deny this distinction is to deny the fullness of both His grace and His sacrifice.
Emperor Marcian This council is convened not for division, but for unity. Let the truth be sought with temperance, lest the empire fracture further over words.
Bishop Dioscorus of Alexandria Words, Augustus? These are the very foundations of our faith! Would you have us barter truth for peace, as the Arians once did?
Bishop Leo of Rome Peace founded on error is no peace at all. But let us reason together as brothers, not as adversaries. The Tome I have presented speaks clearly on this matter.
