Murder of Britannicus
During a palace banquet in the Domus Aurea, Nero's agents poison Britannicus, the rightful heir to Claudius' throne, causing him to convulse violently in front of shocked senators and servants.

Long, low dining couches (lecti) are arranged in a U-shape around the central space, with mosaic floors depicting scenes of harvest and abundance.

Dialog
Britannicus
By the gods... what... what have you done, brother? The cup... it burns like the flames of Dis Pater himself!
Nero
Come now, dear Britannicus, surely a son of Claudius can hold his wine better than this? The night is yet young.
Senator Lucius
Nobilissime... perhaps the prince should be carried to his chambers? The banquet air may be... unwholesome tonight.
Britannicus
Mother... I see... your face in the shadows... Pluto's ferryman comes...
Nero
Observe, honored guests - how even imperial blood succumbs to... overindulgence. A lesson in moderation, is it not?
Senator Lucius
The gods preserve us... this house will answer to Jove's justice for what transpires tonight.
Nero
Do close the curtains when he's finished. The moon is too bright for proper tragic effect.
