Death of Saint Columba

Saint Columba, the revered founder of Iona Abbey, lies on his deathbed in the chapel, surrounded by his devoted monks. His final moments are marked by whispered prayers and the soft chanting of psalms

Setting

The small stone chapel within Iona Abbey, dimly lit with a simple wooden altar at the center. The walls are rough-hewn stone, and the floor is packed earth strewn with rushes. A narrow window allows a sliver of morning light to enter.

Characters

Saint Columba
primary
An elderly man in his mid-70s with a gaunt frame and deeply lined face, his white beard streaked with remnants of its former auburn hue. His pale skin is translucent with age, veins visible beneath the surface. His hands, resting atop a rough woolen blanket, show the calluses of a lifetime of manual labor and writing. His piercing blue eyes, though dimmed by approaching death, retain their sharp intelligence.
Prior Diarmait
primary
A middle-aged man of sturdy build, with a weathered face marked by deep lines of contemplation and sun exposure. His short-cropped brown hair is streaked with grey, and his calloused hands grip the prayer book with practiced familiarity. His dark eyes are intense yet softened by sorrow.
Brother Librarian
secondary
An elderly monk with a gaunt frame and deeply lined face, his thin white hair forming a wispy halo around his tonsured head. His hands, gnarled with age, clutch the psalter tightly, their tremors betraying both his years and his emotional state. Pale blue eyes peer weakly from beneath heavy brows.
Novice
secondary
A young man of perhaps sixteen years, slender with the soft features of youth not yet hardened by labor. His fair hair is cropped short in the monastic tonsure, and his pale skin flushes pink with emotion. Tears leave glistening tracks down his cheeks as he moves quietly.
Monk Scribe
background
A middle-aged monk with a lean frame and slightly hunched posture from years spent bent over manuscripts. His hands are ink-stained and his fingers show signs of arthritis. His tonsured hair is graying at the temples, and his pale blue eyes are watery with both age and suppressed emotion.
