Dialog
Nero
Behold how Apollo’s golden chariot sets the stage afire! A spectacle worthy of Troy’s fall, with Rome herself as our tragic chorus!
Senator
Does it not concern the Divine Augustus' heir that the people’s bread dooms to ashes while their emperor plucks strings? The Curia Hostilia burned thus before Sulla’s reforms.
Praetorian Guard
Dominus, the fire takes the southern shops. The mob grows desperate — we must secure the Palatine gate or retreat to the Esquiline.
Nero
Retreat? When the Fates themselves demand our aria? Observe how the flames dance to my meter!
Senator
The people will remember whose lyre played while their Lares perished. Tiberius at least had the decency to withdraw to Capri during calamity.
Praetorian Guard
The Subura district is lost. If we delay, not even the cohorts can hold back the flames — nor the citizens.
Nero
Then let them blame the Christians if they must cast roles! But mark me, when Rome rises from these ashes, she'll wear my gilded verse as her new stola!
