Battle of Maserfield

The Battle of Maserfield reaches its brutal climax as King Penda of Mercia defeats King Oswald of Northumbria, leaving the battlefield strewn with bodies and the defeated Northumbrians in disarray.

Setting

A wide, open field near Oswestry, with rolling hills and sparse trees. The battlefield is littered with bodies, weapons, and broken shields. The ground is churned up from the fighting, with patches of grass stained red. A slight breeze carries the scent of blood and sweat.

Characters

King Penda of Mercia
primary
A tall, broad-shouldered man in his late 40s with weathered skin, a thick beard streaked with grey, and piercing dark eyes. His muscular frame bears the scars of countless battles, and his long, unkempt hair is tied back with a leather thong. He carries an aura of raw power and authority.
King Oswald of Northumbria
primary
A tall, broad-shouldered man in his mid-thirties with a warrior's build. His fair hair is matted with blood and sweat, and his face is streaked with dirt and grime from battle. His piercing blue eyes, though dimming from loss of blood, still burn with defiance. A deep wound in his side stains his tunic crimson, and his breathing is labored.
Mercian Warrior
secondary
A battle-hardened warrior in his late thirties, with a muscular build and numerous scars across his arms and face. His dark hair is tied back in a warrior's knot, and his weathered skin speaks of years spent under the sun and in battle. His piercing eyes scan the battlefield with a predator's focus.
Northumbrian Soldier
secondary
A young warrior in his late teens, wiry and battle-hardened despite his youth. His fair hair is matted with blood and dirt, and his blue eyes are clouded with pain. His tanned skin is streaked with sweat and grime, and his lips are cracked from exertion.
Christian Monk
background
A middle-aged monk with a gaunt face, deep-set eyes, and a tonsured head. His hands are rough from labor but now tremble from fear and exhaustion. His robes are tattered from the battle, and his face is smudged with dirt and sweat.

Dialog

King Penda of Mercia The White Christ's champion falls today. Let the ravens feast on Northumbrian flesh!
King Oswald of Northumbria Lord Penda, your victory is but fleeting. My soul belongs to God, and He shall judge us both.
Mercian Warrior Shall we take his head, lord? A fine trophy for our hall.
King Penda of Mercia Nay. Let him bleed out like the pigs his Christ fed. A slow death suits a false king.
King Oswald of Northumbria Then I shall pray for your blackened soul, Penda, even as I cross to paradise.
Mercian Warrior The others flee like beaten dogs! Shall we hunt them down?
King Penda of Mercia Let them run. Their terror will sow more fear than any blade. Today, Mercia stands victorious!
