Dialog

King Oswiu By the grace of God and the authority vested in me as king, I call this synod to order. Let each man speak his piece without interruption, for the unity of our faith hangs in the balance.
Bishop Wilfrid The Roman practice is clear, my lord. The calculation of Easter must follow the cycle established by the Holy See, lest we fall into error like those who cling to outdated customs.
Bishop Colman Outdated? The traditions of Columba and Aidan were good enough to bring light to this land when Rome had forgotten us! Shall we now cast aside the wisdom of our fathers like chaff in the wind?
Bishop Wilfrid Your passion does you credit, Colman, but passion is no substitute for truth. Peter holds the keys, not Columba. Do you dare set yourself against the Rock upon which Christ built his Church?
King Oswiu Enough! This bickering serves neither God nor kingdom. I would hear plain counsel - if Peter truly holds the keys, should we not follow his successor in Rome?
Bishop Colman My lord, the tonsure we wear is the crown of thorns, the same as Christ himself bore. Will you have us shave our heads like slaves to Roman fashion?
King Oswiu Then let it be so. We shall follow Rome in this matter, that we may be one with the universal Church. My decision is made.
