Suicide of Emperor Nero

Nero, abandoned by his guards and declared a public enemy by the Senate, takes his own life with the help of his secretary Epaphroditus as Roman soldiers approach to arrest him.

Setting

A secluded chamber in the Villa of Phaon, a modest but well-appointed country estate located just outside Rome. The room is small, with thick stone walls and a single narrow window that lets in a sliver of afternoon light. The floor is covered with simple mosaic tiles, and the air is heavy with the scent of burning oil from a nearby lamp.

TNGF
SELECTED
Nero
primary
A man in his early thirties with a round, fleshy face and a weak chin. His once carefully curled hair is now disheveled, and his eyes are bloodshot from lack of sleep. His skin is pale, almost sickly, and his hands tremble slightly. Despite his current state, there is still a trace of the imperial bearing he once possessed.
Epaphroditus
primary
A middle-aged man of slight build, with sharp features and deep-set eyes that reflect years of service and quiet intelligence. His dark hair is streaked with gray, tied back in a simple Roman style, and his hands are those of a scribe—nimble but bearing the calluses of long hours writing.
Roman Soldier
secondary
A battle-hardened legionary in his late 30s, with a muscular build from years of military service. His face is weathered from campaigns, with a short-cropped beard and several scars visible on his exposed forearms. His dark eyes are alert and focused, reflecting both discipline and the tension of the moment.
Slave Boy
background
A thin, malnourished boy of about 12 years old, with short-cropped dark hair and sunken cheeks. His large, dark eyes dominate his face, reflecting both fear and a lifetime of hardship. His skin is lightly tanned from outdoor work, with visible scars on his arms from past punishments.
