Death of Iras and Charmion

The tragic final moments of Cleopatra's loyal handmaidens, Iras and Charmion, as they choose death over capture by the approaching Roman soldiers, in the royal palace of Alexandria.

Setting

A private chamber within the Royal Palace of Alexandria, adorned with Ptolemaic and Egyptian motifs. The room is spacious with high ceilings, and the walls are painted with scenes of the Nile and gods. The chamber is dimly lit, with shadows stretching across the marble floor. The air is heavy with the scent of incense and the faint metallic tang of blood.

Iras
primary
A young Egyptian woman in her early twenties, with a slender yet graceful build. Her dark, almond-shaped eyes are filled with sorrow, and her olive skin is smooth, reflecting her noble upbringing. Her black hair is intricately braided and adorned with small golden beads, a sign of her status as Cleopatra's handmaiden.
Charmion
primary
A woman in her late 30s with a slender yet strong build, her dark hair intricately braided in the Egyptian style, with a few silver strands betraying her years of service. Her olive skin is smooth but shows the faint lines of a life spent in both service and courtly intrigue.
Roman Centurion
secondary
A battle-hardened Roman officer in his late 30s, with a muscular build and a weathered face marked by years of military campaigns. A scar runs diagonally across his left cheekbone, a testament to past battles.
Roman Soldier
background
A young legionary in his mid-20s, with a lean but muscular build from years of military training. His face is tanned from long campaigns, with sharp features and a short-cropped beard. His dark brown eyes are wide with shock, reflecting the gravity of the scene before him.
