Suicide of Cleopatra VII

Suicide of Cleopatra VII

Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, takes her own life by allowing an asp to bite her, choosing death over humiliation by Octavian's forces.

Setting

Cleopatra's mausoleum, a grand and solemn structure within the royal palace complex of Alexandria, adorned with intricate carvings and precious metals. The chamber is dimly lit, with high ceilings and walls decorated with hieroglyphs and Ptolemaic motifs. The air is thick with the scent of incense and the faint metallic tang of blood.

Characters

Cleopatra VII
primary
A striking woman in her late 30s, with a regal bearing and sharp features. Her complexion is olive-toned, with dark, expressive eyes that convey both intelligence and sorrow. Her hair is styled in the traditional Ptolemaic fashion, with tight curls framing her face and adorned with golden pins. Her posture remains dignified despite the circumstances.
Iras
secondary
A young Egyptian woman in her late 20s, with a slender yet strong build, typical of those who serve in royal courts. Her dark, almond-shaped eyes reflect both sorrow and resolve, and her olive-toned skin is smooth, save for a small scar near her left eyebrow—a reminder of a childhood accident. Her black hair is neatly braided and pinned up in the traditional style of a royal handmaiden.
Charmion
secondary
A woman in her early 30s with a slender yet strong build, honed from years of service. Her dark brown eyes are sharp and attentive, framed by kohl-lined lids in the Egyptian fashion. Her olive skin is smooth, with a few faint lines of worry around her mouth. Her dark hair is neatly braided and pinned close to her head, adorned with simple gold hairpins.
Roman Guard
background
A battle-hardened Roman legionary in his early 30s, with a muscular build from years of military training. His face bears the weathered tan of long campaigns under the Mediterranean sun, with a short-cropped beard and a scar running diagonally across his left cheekbone. His dark brown eyes are alert and wary, constantly scanning for threats.

Dialog

Cleopatra VII The asp's kiss shall be gentler than Octavian's mercy, my sisters. Is all prepared as I commanded?
Charmion It is done, your majesty. The sacred oils burn, the linen is spread. All is as Isis decrees.
Iras The wine...if my lady would first drink? That the poppy might ease your passage to the West.
Cleopatra VII No draughts nor veils between me and Anubis this night. Let Rome see how a pharaoh meets eternity.
Charmion The sacred serpent waits. Your crown sits straight, your ka is ready. It is time.
Iras May the gods receive you as Isis herself, and may we follow swiftly in your shadow.
Cleopatra VII Farewell, my Nile. Egypt dies with me, but never shall they say she knelt.
