Setting

The private chamber of Shaftesbury Abbey, where Cnut the Great lies on his deathbed. The room is small, with thick stone walls and a high, vaulted ceiling. Heavy tapestries depicting biblical scenes hang from the walls, partially muffling the sounds from outside. A narrow window allows a sliver of the outside world to peek through, casting dim light onto the scene.

Characters

Cnut the Great
primary
A once-powerful Viking king now weakened by illness, lying on his deathbed. His once-muscular frame is now gaunt, with hollowed cheeks and sunken eyes. His long, graying beard is unkempt, and his pale skin clings tightly to his bones. Despite his frailty, there remains a regal bearing about him.
Abbot
primary
A tall, gaunt man in his late 60s with a deeply lined face, sharp cheekbones, and piercing grey eyes that convey both wisdom and fatigue. His silver hair is tonsured in the Benedictine tradition, and his hands are rough yet steady from years of labor and prayer.
Queen Emma
secondary
A regal woman in her early 50s, with a composed and dignified presence. Her face bears the marks of time and wisdom, with high cheekbones and a strong jawline. Her hair, once golden, is now streaked with silver, neatly braided and covered by a veil. Her posture is upright, reflecting her royal status, and her hands are clasped in front of her, though her grip is tight with suppressed emotion.
Monk
secondary
A young monk in his early twenties, slender and pale from years spent indoors in study and prayer. His clean-shaven face is framed by a neatly trimmed tonsure, and his large, earnest eyes reflect both devotion and nervousness. His hands, though delicate, show signs of ink stains from copying manuscripts.
Lady-in-waiting
background
A slender woman in her late twenties with delicate features and pale skin, her light brown hair neatly braided and tucked under a simple linen veil. Her eyes are red-rimmed from quiet weeping, and her hands, though neatly kept, are slightly rough from years of service.
