Diet of Worms

Diet of Worms

Martin Luther stands defiantly before Emperor Charles V and the assembled dignitaries of the Holy Roman Empire, refusing to recant his writings that challenge the authority of the Catholic Church.

Setting

The grand hall of the Bishop's Palace in Worms, a high-ceilinged chamber with stone walls adorned with religious tapestries. The room is arranged with a raised dais for Emperor Charles V and his advisors, facing a central space where Martin Luther stands alone.

Characters

Martin Luther
primary
A middle-aged man in his late thirties, with a sturdy build and a round face framed by a short, dark beard. His deep-set eyes burn with conviction, and his forehead is slightly creased from years of scholarly work and theological debate. His hands, though calloused from manual labor in his youth, now bear ink stains from his writings.
Charles V
primary
A tall, imposing figure in his early twenties with a pale complexion, dark brown eyes, and a neatly trimmed beard. His regal bearing is accentuated by his broad shoulders and upright posture, exuding authority and youthful vigor.
Archbishop of Trier
secondary
A middle-aged man with a robust yet slightly stooped frame, tinged with the pallor of a life spent indoors. His sharp, hawkish nose and piercing gray eyes lend him an air of authority. Thin lips often pressed in disapproval, and a carefully trimmed beard flecked with gray.
Imperial Guard
background
A tall, broad-shouldered soldier in his late 20s with a weathered face and a closely cropped beard. His piercing blue eyes scan the room alertly, and his muscular frame is evident even beneath his armor. A faint scar runs along his left cheekbone, a testament to past battles.

Dialog

Charles V Martin Luther, we have heard your words, yet you persist in your defiance. Will you now, at this solemn hour, recant your heresies and return to the fold of Holy Mother Church?
Martin Luther Unless I am convinced by Scripture or plain reason—for I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other—my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant, for it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience.
Archbishop of Trier Your Grace, this obstinacy is a direct challenge to the authority of both Church and Empire. To tolerate such insolence is to invite chaos.
Charles V Then you leave us no choice, Brother Martin. A single monk, led astray by his own judgment, dares set himself against the faith of Christendom? This we cannot permit.
Martin Luther Here I stand. I can do no other. May God help me.
