Suicide of Nero

Suicide of Nero

Emperor Nero, cornered and abandoned, hesitates to take his own life as he hears the approaching horsemen sent to arrest him. His loyal freedman Epaphroditus urges him to act before it's too late.

Setting

A secluded garden near the Villa of Phaon, outside Rome. The area is surrounded by tall cypress trees and overgrown shrubs, providing a sense of isolation. The ground is uneven, with patches of dry grass and scattered stones. A small marble bench sits near a crumbling stone wall, partially shaded by a dying olive tree.

TNGF
SELECTED
Nero
primary
A man in his early 30s, with a slightly overweight build and a round face. His features are soft but now contorted with fear and indecision. His hair is short and curly, typical of Roman nobility, though now disheveled from his flight. His eyes are wide with panic, and his skin is pale and sweaty from exertion and terror.
Epaphroditus
secondary
A middle-aged man of slight build, with sharp features and a closely trimmed beard. His dark eyes are intense, reflecting both urgency and deep loyalty. His hands are calloused from years of writing, and his posture is slightly hunched from long hours at a desk.
Lead Horseman
secondary
A battle-hardened Roman cavalry commander in his late 30s, with a muscular build and weathered features. His face bears several scars from previous campaigns, and his dark brown hair is cropped short in military fashion. His piercing grey eyes are sharp with focus, and his jaw is set with determination.
Second Horseman
background
A young Roman cavalry soldier in his mid-20s, with a lean but muscular build from years of riding. His sun-weathered face bears a short, practical beard, and his dark eyes are sharp with alertness. His hair is cropped short in military fashion, with sweat glistening on his brow from the pursuit.

Dialog

Nero Must I, like a common thief, die in this wretched place? The world should weep for such an artist lost!
Epaphroditus Dominus, the horses draw near! For your honor, act now—before they drag you through the streets like a slave!
Nero No, no—it cannot end like this! Jupiter himself would weep to see Nero fall!
Lead Horseman There—by the wall! Move! The Senate's justice comes for the tyrant!
Epaphroditus Now, Dominus! Let it be by your own hand, not theirs!
Nero Then... then let Rome remember me as I was—magnificent!
Lead Horseman Too late! Ride them down!
