Death of Vitellius

Vitellius, the deposed Roman emperor, is dragged through the streets by Vespasian's troops and executed at the Gemonian stairs, marking the violent end of his brief reign during the Year of the Four E

Setting

The Gemonian stairs, a steep and narrow flight of stone steps leading from the Capitoline Hill down to the Roman Forum. The steps are worn smooth by centuries of use, flanked by crumbling travertine walls and overlooked by the towering Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

Dialog

Legionary Captain By Jupiter's thunder, drag the usurper to the stairs! Let Rome see the fate of those who grasp at power they cannot hold.
Mob Leader Hah! Look at fat-guts now! Where's your feast, piss-drinker? The crows'll feast on you instead!
Vitellius Yet I was your emperor... Will you not grant me a clean death?
Legionary Captain You were never Rome's true emperor. Only Vespasian holds that honor now. Legionary! Finish it.
Mob Leader Aye, give 'im the stairs! Let 'im join the other rats in Dis Pater's halls!
Legionary Captain Enough. The sentence is carried out. Clear the stairs.
Mob Leader Bah! No sport in it when the dogs do the work for us. Come on, lads—let's find some wine to celebrate!
