Viking raid on Iona Abbey

Viking raiders storm Iona Abbey, looting and destroying the sacred monastic site while monks scramble to save themselves and their treasures.

Setting

Iona Abbey, a Christian monastery on the small island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland. The abbey is surrounded by a stone wall, with wooden gates that are now breached. The interior includes a main church, scriptorium, living quarters, and storage buildings. The raid is in full swing as Vikings move through the compound.

Characters

Abbot
primary
An elderly man in his late 60s, with a thin, wiry frame and a deeply lined face that speaks of years spent in contemplation and hardship. His hands are gnarled from arthritis, yet they move with deliberate grace. His pale blue eyes are sharp beneath bushy white eyebrows, and his tonsured hair is pure white.
Viking Leader
primary
A towering Norse warrior in his late 30s, standing well over six feet with a muscular, battle-hardened frame. His face is weathered by sea winds, featuring a thick blond beard braided with leather cords and piercing blue eyes that command attention. A prominent old scar runs from his left temple to cheekbone, marking him as a seasoned fighter.
Novice Monk
secondary
A thin, pale young man in his late teens with close-cropped brown hair and wide, fearful eyes. His hands are ink-stained from manuscript work, and his frame trembles slightly with the weight of the moment.
Viking Warrior
secondary
A burly, battle-hardened Norse raider in his late 20s or early 30s, with a thick beard and braided hair. His arms are heavily muscled from years of rowing and fighting. A fresh scar runs across his left cheekbone, and his knuckles are scarred from previous battles. His eyes are sharp and focused, scanning for valuables amidst the chaos.
Monastic Scribe
background
A gaunt elderly monk in his late 60s, with a long white beard and deeply lined face that speaks of decades spent hunched over manuscripts. His pale blue eyes are wide with terror, and his thin hands tremble violently as they clutch the cross. His shoulders are permanently stooped from years of scribal work.

Dialog

Abbot By the relics of Saint Columba, cease this sacrilege! These holy walls are consecrated to God alone.
Viking Leader Your god's silver shines brighter than ours, old man. Hand over the reliquaries and none need die—ah!
Novice Monk Father... the Chi-Rho pages... they're too heavy to carry...
Abbot Then save the sacramentals first, my son. The Word endures even when vellum burns.
Viking Leader Enough priest-talk! That chest—break it open! I smell Frankish gold.
Novice Monk Mary protect us—they're coming! The salt cellar... it's still in the refectory...
Abbot Deus vult... Then take what you must, heathen, but know this—Iona's light will outlast your axes.
