Death of Alfred the Great

Alfred the Great, on his deathbed, is surrounded by family and advisors in the royal chambers of Winchester Castle. He is dictating his final words and succession plans, while scribes record his comma

Setting

Winchester Castle's royal chambers, a stone-walled room with high ceilings and narrow windows. The space is dominated by a large four-poster bed with heavy drapes, surrounded by wooden benches and stools. Tapestries depicting biblical scenes and Saxon victories line the walls, and a small altar with a crucifix stands in one corner.

Characters

Alfred the Great
primary
A frail, elderly man with a gaunt face and thinning silver hair, his once-strong frame now diminished by illness. His pale skin is marked by deep lines of age and stress, with piercing blue eyes that still hold intelligence and authority despite his weakened state.
Ealhswith
primary
A woman in her late 40s with a slender but strong build, her face lined with both care and dignity. She has deep-set blue eyes that reflect wisdom and sorrow, and her light brown hair, streaked with gray, is pulled back tightly under a linen headrail. Her hands are clasped together, knuckles white with tension, and her posture is both weary and resolute.
Edward
secondary
A young man of 22 years with a lean but sturdy build, inheriting his father's piercing blue eyes and high cheekbones. His light brown hair is cut short in the Saxon style, with a neatly trimmed beard. His hands, clasped in prayer, bear the calluses of sword training.
Bishop Asser
secondary
A Welsh monk in his late 50s, with a thin, ascetic frame and a balding head with a fringe of gray hair. His deep-set eyes are shadowed by prominent brows, and his face bears the lines of both wisdom and weariness. His hands, clasped around a crucifix, are slender with long fingers, accustomed to writing and prayer.
Scribe
background
A middle-aged monk with a gaunt face and close-cropped brown hair, his tonsure neatly shaved. His hands are ink-stained from years of meticulous writing, and his posture is slightly hunched from long hours bent over manuscripts.
Guard Captain
background
A tall, broad-shouldered man in his late 30s with a weathered face, short-cropped brown hair, and a thick beard. His piercing blue eyes scan the room with vigilance, and his muscular frame is clad in well-worn battle gear.

Ealhswith God's mercy be upon thee, my lord. The Nunnaminster shall keep vigil for thy soul each night.
Bishop Asser As Solomon wrote: 'The just man's memory shall be blessed.' Let the scribes record these words for all generations.
Alfred the Great Asser... see that my laws are kept. And Ealhswith... the children...
Edward Father? Father!
Bishop Asser Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine... The king has gone to God's embrace.
