Characters

Alfred the Great
primary
A gaunt man in his late 50s with a lined face that still bears traces of nobility. His once-golden hair is now thin and white, his beard neatly trimmed. His hands, resting atop the fur coverlet, show the calluses of a warrior and scholar both. Pale blue eyes, still sharp despite the pain, move between his assembled family.
Ealhswith
primary
A woman in her late 40s, with a dignified yet weary presence. Her once golden hair is now streaked with silver, tied back in a simple braid. Her face shows the marks of time and care, with deep-set blue eyes that reflect both strength and sorrow. Her hands are clasped tightly, knuckles white with tension.
Edward
secondary
A young man in his early twenties, with a strong but lean build, inherited from his father. His face is angular, with piercing blue eyes and a short, well-kept beard. His hair is dark brown, slightly tousled from the emotional strain of the moment.
Bishop Asser
secondary
A Welsh monk in his late 50s with a thin, ascetic frame and a balding head with a fringe of gray hair. His deeply lined face shows years of scholarly work and devotion, with sharp blue eyes that often appear thoughtful. His hands are delicate, accustomed to holding quills and sacred texts.
Scribe
background
A middle-aged monk with a lean build, clean-shaven face, and short brown hair in a tonsure. His hands are ink-stained from years of writing, and his eyes are sharp with focus.

Dialog

Alfred the Great We charge you, Ætheling, to hold the fyrd strong against the heathen host. Let not our people's shields falter when the ravens come again.
Edward By the cross I swear it, father. Your defenses shall stand as you built them; your laws shall endure as you wrote them.
Ealhswith Peace, my lord. The scribes have recorded every word. Let your mind rest now as it has served God and Wessex so well.
Alfred the Great I would see the candlelight upon your face once more, beloved, before Pluto's shadow takes mine.
Ealhswith Hush now. The abbey bells will ring for Lauds soon, and you must keep your strength for the blessed sacrament.
Edward The ealdormen wait below, father. Shall I tell them you give your blessing to the witan's choice?
Alfred the Great They need no blessing to know what is right. The blood of Cerdic flows in your veins, my son. That is Wessex's answer.
